Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday to the nation that you formed when you were seventeen
You bought yourself an island, and you built a video game company
And now you spend your time governing citizens and making lots of money.
Are you lonely?
"Well no, I've got my friends, I've got my health, I've got prosperity"
Well what about your family?
"Well... what about my family?
They would scream and yell into the night while I stared into the ocean sea"
One day you woke up to deafening silence around you
Your father was shaking and crying in the living room
He held a crumpled up note in his palm
You desperately combed through your house but your mother was gone
So happy birthday,
you tell your friends that you're much better off without your parents.
No despondent father, no mother committed to abandonment
Today's a day for celebration, so let the parties commence.

This is an open letter to our intergalactic overlord
What are you going to do about the lack of libraries in this town?
I've been trying to do a research paper on you, but there's no books to be found
Also the weekly public executions are getting me and my buddies down.
When was the last time you had to fuel your planet destroying spaceship?
Did you see what you paid for gas? You should agree it's a joke.
And have you seen the public school test scores? They're at an all time low
And when are you going to clean up the streets? They're on fire and they reek of dope.
Sometimes it feels like you don't even care about us
When you're done destroying suns, there's some things we'd like to discuss
Last night I heard an explosion in the sky and I felt it
it felt like the weight of a world being destroyed in a heartbeat
As it lit up the sky I felt a chill from my head to my feet
And my bones shone through my skin like an x-ray machine
Sometimes it feels like you've got better things on your mind
So if you'd drop by every once and awhile, that'd be fine.

The Hurricane
03:08
|
|||
Ran into you at the grocery store I work at
It's been a long while since I've seen you smile like that
Our last encounter had been a gamble, but I felt good about this
We agreed to hang out once I had finished my shift
The wind was howling and the sky was black as ice as it rained
The streetcar driver warned us about the impending hurricane
We found a seat, exchanging smiles, and your leg brushed up right against mine
It was no secret the kind of night that you had in mind
but the bridge up ahead had been destroyed by wind, and we careened towards the end
I thought to call my family, but we were floating like astronauts in zero gravity.
And I wrapped myself around you, as though to save you from the crash.
and I wished there was a way that we could kiss in our last act.
One last time

Ambulance
04:20
|

You don't need to worry.
I've been writing songs again
It's been a long while since I've needed help,
It's a good headspace I'm in
I remember when it happened
It was you who called the ambulance
and as you wrapped my bandages
I felt like shit for putting you through that
And you brought me magazines
That you snuck in from the lobby
and you brought me magazines
That you knew I wouldn't read
You had to cancel your plans
There were tickets to a concert to sell
I'm sorry you missed your favourite band,
I'm sorry I put you through hell
When I came to in that hospital room
I saw you with a shit eating grin
I joked about how much I hated my voice
and you said "yeah, but I sure would miss it"
And you brought me magazines
And you weren't even angry
And you brought me magazines
I guess someone does care about me
